Lesson 4 – Read & Lang. Focus 1
Objectives: 
Reading for details about how things are recycled.
Language contents:
Words: tire, pipe, deposit, refill, melt. 
Grammar: Passive form (present simple)
Techniques:
Qs And As, Scanning for details, word square 
Teaching aids:
Textbook, cassette, transparency, flash cards  
Procedures:
Teacher’s and students’ activities
content
-Put the word square chart on the board
- Tell Ss the topic is about the environment and there are 14 hidden words.
-Divide the class into 4 groups
- Ask Ss to write their answers on a piece of paper and hand in when they finish.
- Tell Ss the group with the most right words is the winner.
T asks Sts “What is it about?” 
Sts listen and answer.
“It’s about recycling things – car tires, bottles, glass, drink cans, compost”
T presents some new words through Sts’ answers
Tire, pipe, deposit, refill, and melt.
* Sts listen, repeat, give the meaning and take notes
Sts read the new words orally
T has Sts look at the Qs (p.93), read the text and find the answers 
* Sts work individually and then work in pairs, ask and answer, then give the As
T and Sts check the As. 
- T has Sts look at the sentences (p.93), read the text again and complete them.
* Sts work individually and then compare their answers with their partners, then give the As
T has Sts compare two sentences about “form and meaning”:
People clean and refill milk bottles.
Milk bottles are cleaned and refilled
“The second sentence is in passive form
(to be) + past participle (V3/ed)”
- T explains how to use passive form and how to change into passive form
Practice:
- T has Sts find more examples in passive form from the text
T has Sts work in groups, look at the pictures (p.95) and the instructions, and order the pictures.
* Sts work in groups, then give the As
a-1, b-4, c-3, d-5, e-2, f-6 
- T has Sts write the instructions in passive form
* Sts work individually and then compare their answers with their partners, then give the As

4. POST- READING

a. The glass is broken into small pieces.
b. Then the glass is washed with a detergent liquid.
c. Then the glass pieces are dried completely.
d. They are mixed with certain specific chemicals.
e. The mixture is melted until it becomes a liquid.
f. A long pipe is used. It is dipped into the liquid. Then the liquid is blown into intended shape.
5. HOMEWORK : 
- Write and learn new words by heart.
- Write the answers of 1/p.95 (book).
