Procedure Stage Steps/Activities Work arrangements Warm up (3’) Chatting - Ask ss some questions. + What food do you like? + Do you like eating fatty food and sugar? + Should you eat too much? T - whole class Pre reading (15’) I. Pre teach vocabulary - balanced diet: chế độ ăn cân đối (explanation) - affect (v): ảnh hưởng (translation) - moderate (adj): vừa phải (explanation) - amount (n): số lượng (translation) - dairy product: sản phẩm từ sữa (definition: product is made from milk) - cereals (n): ngũ cốc (example) - energy (n): năng lượng (example) - lifestyle (n): lối sống (definition: the way in which an individual or a group lives) * Checking vocabulary: Matching - Write the English words on the left of the board and the Vietnamese translation on the right (use a poster). - Ask ss to match the Vietnamese and the correct English equivalent. II. True - False statements - Ask ss to close the books. - Set the scene: Have ss look at the pictures about a fat person and a thin person then ask them some questions. + What do they look like? -> A man is very fat and the other is very thin. + Do you want to be fat or thin? -> No. + What should we do to keep fit and stay healthy? (Ss’ answers). => T let ss think of the content of the text then presents the topic of the text: You will read the text about a balanced diet. - Have ss close their books - Give 6 statements: 1. The food we eat affects our whole life. 2. Sugar gives us energy and make us feel less hungry. 3. We shouldn't eat all the food we enjoy. 4. We should eat a lot of fatty food and sugar. 5. We should eat many kinds of food but we shouldn't eat too much of anything. 6. We should do exercise regularly to keep fit. - Ask ss to read the statements and work in pairs to guess which is true, which is false. - Give feedback. Reading and checking - Have ss read the text about a balanced diet on page 120 and check their predictions. - Give feedback. * Answer keys: 1T 2T 3F 4F 5T 6T II. Comprehension questions * Spin wheel - Write 4 numbers, each number is for a question. - Have ss choose the numbers and answer the questions. If their answer is right, that team can spin the wheel to get the scores on the wheel. If it is wrong, the other team will answer and get the scores for their answer. Questions: 1. What are two advantages of eating sugar? -> Eating sugar in moderate amounts can give us energy and make you feel less hungry. 2. What does a balanced diet mean? -> It means you eat a variety of foods without eating too much of anything. 3. What should we eat to have a balanced diet? -> We should eat a moderate amount of fatty food and sugar; some body-building foods, like meat and dairy products; and plenty of cereals, fruit and vegetables. 4. Is a balanced diet alone enough for a healthy lifestyle? Why?/Why not? -> No, because we all need exercise to keep a healthy life. T - whole class Team work Post reading (10’) Write it up: Write the menu for your family - Have ss work in groups of four: some groups write the menu for breakfast, some groups write for lunch and others write for dinner. - Call on some groups to write their menu on the board. - Give feedback.
