 3. Can you tell me some folktales you like to read best?

- Have students name some characters usually appearing in most of the folktales:

UNIT 4: OUR PAST
LESSON 3: READ and listen
I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Educational aim: Have moral lesson for our life.
2. Teaching aims: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
	- Understand and retell the story “The Lost Shoe”, give moral lesson for a story.
	- Develop their reading and listening skills.
II. PREPARATIONS: Book, cassette tape
III. PROCEDURES:

* Chat with students:

 2. What kinds of stories do you like to read?
 3. Can you tell me some folktales you like to read best?

2. Pre – Reading: (5’)
- Introduce the lesson.
- Ask students to listen to the tape to answer the following questions:
 1. How many leading characters are there in the story?
Ê Six (a poor farmer, Little Pea, her new mother, Stout Nut, the Prince, a Fairy)
 2. Who lost the shoe, Stout Nut or Little Pea?
Ê Little Pea.
 3. On what season did the Prince want to choose his wife from the village?
Ê In the fall.
 4. Did the Prince marry Stout Nut?
Ê No. He married Little Pea.
- Pre-teach vocabulary: 
1. marry sb (v):

3. upset (adj):
4. died of broken heart (v)
5. hold a harvest festival (n):
7.magical (adj) =>magically (adv)
8. rags (n) = old, worn or torn clothes.

3. While – Reading: (20’)
- Have students read the story and check their listening answers
- Have students do the gap-filling exercise in pairs.
 a. Little Pea’s father was a farmer.
 b. Little Pea’s mother died when she was young.
 c. Little Pea had/used to do housework all day after her father got married again.
 d. The Prince wanted to marry/choose a girl from Little Pea’s village.
 e. stout Nut’s mother did not make new clothes for Little Pea.
 f. The Prince found Little Pea’s lost shoe.
- Ask students to work in groups to answer the questions. 
- Tell students to give feedback. 
 a. She was a poor farmer’s daughter.
 b. She made her do the chores all day.
 c. Before the festival, a fairy appeared and magically changed her rags into beautiful clothes.
 d. He decided to marry Little Pea because the shoe (which the Prince was keeping) fitted her.
 e. No, it isn’t. Because there isn’t a fairy in real life.
- Ask students to practice asking and answering the questions. 
4. Post – Reading: (13’)
- Ask students to work in groups, to retell the story.
- Have students predict the moral lesson of the story.
 a. Don’t kill chickens.
 b. Don’t be foolish and greedy.
 c. Be happy with what you have.
 d. It is difficult to find gold.
- Ask students to give feedback: b, c
5. Homework: (13’)
- Reread the story.
- Write the summary the story.
- Prepare next lesson: Unit 4- Write/ p.42, 43.
